Dynamic duo set to defend top title
HOT FAVOURITES: Lucy Boulton and Denise Johns
HOT FAVOURITES: Lucy Boulton and Denise Johns

LUCY Boulton and Denise Johns are red-hot favourites to defend their women's title at next week's Weymouth Beach Volleyball Classic (July 25-27).

The reigning champions always excel at the resort and will take some stopping while the men's section seems wide open with at least eight teams all capable of winning.

Great Britain's top two duos will no doubt be in the running. Jody Gooding and Robin Miedzybodzki are both former winners but although Steve Grotowski and Jake Sheaf have never won at the resort they are expected to be right in the mix as well.

Both teams have been playing in the European and World Tours throughout the summer, and will be arriving fresh from a big event in Marseilles, France.

Weymouth Beach debutants Sergio Nunez and Abel Bernal are also likely to be in the running. They usually play on the Spanish Tour and will be somewhat of an unknown quantity.

Another team to keep an eye on will be Switzerland's Berni Vesti and Australian Aaron Stolberg, who will play together for the first time. They have been regulars at the Classic in past years with Stolberg winning in 2005. Last year's runners-up Steve Fee and Albrecht Glitz will also be taking part in the tournament along with Morph Bowes and Matt Grinlaubs who won the recent Sandbanks tournament.

Grinlaubs represented Australia at the Sydney Olympics while Bowes is the Weymouth reigning champion. Finally, Volleyball England Beach tour leaders Matt Pearce and Tom Lord cannot be discounted and neither can last year's Weymouth semi-finalists Richard Payne and Brett Goslett, who hail from South Africa.

Meanwhile, in the Weymouth local league David Markwick and Terry Oldrid are sure to be champions for 2008 after they defeated Russ Laming and James Tagart 15-11. With two weeks still to go they have now taken an unassailable lead.

Micky Randall and Chris Canham won this week's B series, beating Ashley Smith's pairing in the final 15-12.
